Smart home outlets and switches solve different holes in the wall. A plug is reversible. A switch is a relationship with your electrical box. Buy them like that.
Use a plug when
- The lamp has a mechanical switch you can leave on
- You rent, or the box has no neutral and you refuse a drama
- You want energy monitoring on a space heater or PC
Use an in-wall switch when
- Guests will still slap the paddle
- The fixture is hardwired
- You want the room to feel finished, not gadgeted
