Matter vs Thread vs Zigbee in 2026: what to buy, what to keep
They are not competitors. Treating them like they are is how you buy three hubs and still lose the lock.

The most expensive sentence in smart home retail is “this replaces Zigbee.” It does not. Matter is an application layer. Thread and Zigbee are low-power meshes. Wi-Fi is the impatient cousin that still makes sense for cameras and plugs. Once you see the stack, shopping gets calmer.

What we buy now
- New battery sensors and locks: Matter over Thread.
- New bulbs in a home without Hue: Matter over Thread (Nanoleaf Essentials, IKEA, newer TP-Link).
- Hue homes: stay on Hue. Their Matter bridge is a translator, not a reason to rip bulbs out.
- Cameras and vacuums: Ethernet or good Wi-Fi. Do not wait for Thread video.
What to keep
A 40-device Zigbee mesh that already covers the house is an asset. Migrating it to Thread for purity will cost weekends and give you the same lights. Add Matter where multi-admin matters (locks, thermostats, garage) so a partner can use Apple Home while you live in Home Assistant.
The decision
Buy Matter as insurance. Buy Thread as plumbing for new battery devices. Keep Zigbee as the mesh that already works. Anyone selling you a full rip-and-replace is selling labor, not a protocol.

Is Zigbee dead?
No. A healthy Zigbee mesh of bulbs and sensors is still excellent. Stop expanding it with new unique-protocol gadgets; add Thread/Matter for new battery devices and locks.
Is Matter the same as Thread?
Matter is the common language. Thread (or Wi-Fi, or Ethernet) is how the bits travel. A Matter-over-Wi-Fi plug is not a Thread device.
Do I need a Matter hub?
You need a Matter controller (Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon, SmartThings, Home Assistant, or a vendor hub). Thread devices also need at least one Thread border router on the same network.
