Thermostats are where smart-home marketing goes to die. A beautiful UI cannot invent a C-wire, and no LLM will make a 1998 heat pump stage correctly. Ecobee’s Premium is still the model we recommend because it treats those boring constraints as the product.
Comfort, not just a schedule
The included remote sensor plus radar occupancy is the difference between a thermostat and a $40 programmable plate. In our test house the upstairs stayed within 1.2°F of the target during a July heat wave when we weighted bedrooms after 9 p.m. Nest’s single-point sensing still over-cools the hallway in the same floor plan.

Air quality and automations
The VOC and humidity sensors are useful because they are in the return path, not on a nightstand. We triggered a bathroom exhaust and a portable purifier from Home Assistant when VOC spiked after cooking. That is the Premium justifying itself if you already own those devices.
The verdict
Buy the Premium for any whole-home forced-air system you actually live in. Buy Essential for a rental or a one-zone condo. Buy Nest if you want the Google look and are willing to give up sensor strategy. Honeywell’s 2026 Matter model is fine for builders; it is not as thoughtful about rooms.

Is the Premium worth $80 more than Ecobee’s Essential?
Yes if you care about air quality, a speaker for Alexa, or radar occupancy without buying extra sensors on day one. For a simple condo, Essential is enough.
Does Matter replace the Ecobee app?
No. Matter is fine for setpoints and modes. Schedules, sensor weighting, and firmware still live in Ecobee’s app or Home Assistant’s native integration.
