Hue built the category. Nanoleaf finally made the commodity version that does not punish you for skipping the bridge. The 2026 Essentials A19 on Matter over Thread stayed online through three ISP outages and two Apple TV updates in our lighting rack — a sentence we could not write about earlier Essentials hardware.
Light quality
Whites are the win. 2700K at 8% looks like a lamp, not a USB gadget. Saturated reds and teal still wash out compared with Hue or a Nanoleaf panel. Use these for lamps, halls, and bedrooms. Use Hue or a gradient strip when the wall is the show.
The verdict
Fit a whole home with Essentials, then spend the savings on a good dimmer and one statement fixture. That is a more grown-up lighting plan than a $70 starter kit and three lonely color bulbs.

Do I need a Nanoleaf hub?
No. You need a Thread border router (Apple TV, HomePod, Aqara hub, some Google/Nest devices, or a Home Assistant radio). That is the point.
