Retrofit locks used to be a compromise you felt every time the motor growled. The Lock Ultra is the first SwitchBot we would put on a primary door without an apology. The motor is quieter, the clutch no longer chews cheap deadbolts, and Matter over Thread means Apple Home and Home Assistant see the same lock state.
Install reality
Twenty minutes on a standard US deadbolt. The alignment template matters; rush it and auto-lock will retry like a nervous intern. The optional Keypad Touch is the right buy — fingerprints worked with wet hands after a firmware bump in May 2026, which older SwitchBot pads never managed.
- Use Thread. Bluetooth-only mode is a demo, not a door.
- Pair Matter through your border router, then disable cloud unlock if you do not need it.
- Keep one physical key with a neighbor. Batteries last ~6 months in our traffic; they are not magic.
The verdict
Choose Yale or Schlage if you can replace the whole lock and want a heavier bolt. Choose Level if you want the invisible look and have a compatible door prep. Choose SwitchBot Ultra when the door is not yours to drill or the existing bolt is already good.

Usually yes, because your original deadbolt stays. Remove the interior module and the door looks stock. Confirm your lease anyway.
