How to make home appliances smart is mostly “instrument them,” not “replace them.” A $20 sensor plus a plug gets you 80% of the notifications people pay a thousand extra dollars for.

When to buy native smart
If you need true remote start on a locked oven, or leak shutoff on a dishwasher, buy the appliance that supports it. A plug cannot see a door latch.

Can I make a regular washer smart?
Yes enough: a vibration or power-monitoring sensor tells Home Assistant or Apple Home when the cycle ends. You cannot add remote door unlock or detergent dosing without the factory board.
